Obit of the Day (Breaking): Andy Rooney
Andy Rooney, the well-liked curmudgeon who pioneered the news commentary on CBS’ 60 Minutes, has died at the age of 92. Rooney retired from 60 Minutes only last month after delivering his 1,097th commentary.
Before joining the news show in 1978, Rooney worked as a reporter for CBS beginning in 1949. Prior to that, while serving in World War II, Rooney wrote for Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper.
During his sixty-two year career in journalism, Rooney received a Peabody, four Emmys (two for 60 Minutes) and six Writers Guild of America awards.
