“This is not really a victory of any sort or even necessarily something to be celebrated,” Mr. Bascomb said about 1 World Trade Center overtopping the Empire State Building. “It’s kind of like competing against a ghost.”

Sometime Monday afternoon, 1 World Trade Center will eclipse the Empire State Building as the tallest building in New York City. Via the NYT.

This photo set is incredible, check out more here.

Apparently heavily edited? Is it ok to alter your own work?

Atheists Sue to Block Display of Cross-Shaped Beam in 9/11 Museum »

So first we had the “World Trade Center Mosque.” Now, we have the “World Trade Center Cross.” How long before we have the “World Trade Center Magen David?”

In the days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, some workers and mourners at the World Trade Center site seized upon a cross-shaped steel beam found amid the rubble as a symbol of faith and hope.

For the past five years, the 17-foot-tall cross was displayed outside a nearby Catholic church. On Saturday it was moved again, to the site of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, where it is to be in the permanent collection.

But the move quickly provoked a lawsuit from American Atheists, a nonprofit group based in New Jersey. It arguedthat because the cross is a religious symbol of Christianity and the museum is partly government financed and is on government property, the cross’s inclusion in the museum violates the United States Constitution and state civil rights law. The lawsuit, in turn, provoked the ire of the American Center for Law and Justice, a conservative public interest law firm, as well as others.

Regretting Move, Bank May Return to Manhattan »

Fifteen years ago, New York City’s reputation as an international financial center was called into question when the giant Swiss bank UBS moved its North American headquarters to the Connecticut suburbs, where it built the largest trading floor in the world.

Now, though, UBS is having buyer’s remorse. It turns out that a suburban location has become a liability in recruiting the best and brightest young bankers, who want to live in Manhattan or Brooklyn, not in Stamford, Conn., which is about 35 miles northeast of Midtown. The firm has also discovered that it would be better to be closer to major clients in New York City.

As a result, UBS is seriously considering a reverse migration that would bring its investment banking division and up to 2,000 bankers and traders back to Wall Street and a new skyscraper at the rebuilt World Trade Center, according to real estate executives and city officials.

Historic Trinity Church on Lower Broadway at the Foot of Wall Street. Behind Loom the Towers of One of Manhattan’s Newest Giants, the World Trade Center 05/1973 (via National Archives)

Beautiful. Although, I wonder if the Instagram/Hipstamatic apps have desensitized us a bit to these older film stocks.

New 9/11 video emerges, nearly 10 years later

The Wall Street Journal:

Almost a decade has passed since the terrorist attacks, but on Sunday  a new video of that day emerged on the video-sharing website YouTube. The 17-minute video captures the aftermath of the impact from a police helicopter circling the Twin Towers, including the officers’ reactions as they watch the skyscrapers collapse.

Haunting.
